YCARE
Inspired by the past controversial issue regarding the North Carolina DMV driver's license for indocumented youth to obtain, particularly affecting the Hispanic/Latino communities who qualify under the Dream Act, I decided to create a social web multimedia platform that helps support the issues or causes in the community that matter to people most. It seeks to explore ways in which various communities can bring about advocacy, debate, petitions, and resources across the local, region, and state level.
RESEARCH INTERVIEWS
BLUE RIBBON YOUTH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
Throughout this process, I found an opportunity to visit both Carrboro High School and Phoneix Academy to ask students belonging to a community leadership organization known as Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) during their weekly lunch meetings, in order to gain more insightful perspectives on this particular topic. There were several mixed opinions and feelings towards the issue regarding NC DMV licenses for undocumented youth immigrants, some of which seemed to either be more or less empowered by how certain laws would shape the benefits and consequences of those affected. However, students at both high schools believed that that this was an issue that needed to be addressed but was not necessarily sure how to go beyond the stage of awareness that would lead to social change. The students expressed their written thoughts on a compiled set of sticky notes and with the option to openly share with the rest of the group.
FOCUS QUESTIONS
-Why Should or Should This Not Matter?
-What do you think about the NC DMV DACA license design & written language for immigrant youth?
-What are the benefits & consequences of this matter?
-What steps should youth (or college-aged) take?
LIVE PROTESTS
NC DREAM TEAM
The NC DREAM Team held a small-to-medium size live protest back in March at local Raleigh NC DMV to voice their opinions about the controversial issue for undocumented youth immigrants obtaining their driver's license. This was the first time that I had ever witnessed a live protest alongside other press media and news outlets, such as ABC 11 News while gathering raw video footage and still photography. By attending the live protest event, this has allowed me to engage both as an active observer and participant in hopes to better understand how these group members seek to empower their communities. Based on these findings, I proceeding to create wireframe prototypes for the web leading up to the final deliverable, including visual animation storyboards for the video.

REFLECTION INSIGHTS
The level of involvement in this project is one that allowed me to express my engagement with the individuals and groups around a social-driven issue and to understand their viewpoints. By being an active listener and observer, I was able to better strategize the ways in which I decided to create the design platform embedded with a community oriented focus. Of course, I would not have gained as much invaluable knowledge had I not conducted interviews or attended a live protest but I certainly am glad that these experience enabled me to be strengthed as a designer in dealing with reearch topics, field studies, and ethnographic research in design.
